Here's a mix of some of my personal favorite Larry Levan remixes and productions. Many people in the dance community already understand the role that Larry had on shaping the New York club culture via the legendary Paradise Garage which lasted a little over a decade. I was fortunate enough to experience Larry's magic in the G the year the club came to an end in 1987. You could only get in as a member and luckily one of the older members on my block was able to make it happen for me. I was in my teens and it literally changed my life forever. I caught that bug...It's something that's embedded in your soul for an eternity. I sometimes hear from older members that I should have been around when he was really on fire in the earlier days, but 1987 was good enough for me. The sound system alone was something that I have yet to see duplicated. You could feel the bass in your chest. I remember riding home on the train feeling like I had gone deaf. My ears never rang again like it did that sunday afternoon. I grew up listening to his music mainly on WBLS via Frankie Crocker and Tony Humphries in the early 80s' and I have memories of going to my local record store in the neighborhood to buy jams like 'Let's Go Dancin'' by Sparque and I got 'My Mind Made Up' by Instant Funk, both included in this session. As a New Yorker and anyone living in New York in the 80's you couldn't really avoid Larry's work. Some of his work even infiltrated the hip hop world via samples with records like 'Heartbeat' by Taana Gardner, '7th Heaven' used in Biggie's 'Friend of Mine' and Central Line's 'Walking Into Sunshine' used in the classic LL Cool J/Marley Marl remix of 'Jingling Baby.' Some call it Boogie, some say Disco, and some Garage but at the end of the day it's straight up good music that you can dance to and enjoy, period! This is part one, more to come shortly. Uno,

About DjI am Dj Spinna and I love music. I play what I feel and I feel what I play, literally. I didn't become a dj to be cool or part of a trend. I'm a dj because it's my ultimate get high and my destiny. It's one of the only forms of entertainment where you can be in front of masses of people and aurally control emotions and energy, without uttering a single word yourself, but letting the music be your mouthpiece...kinda like being a one man band. Djing is an expression that I take seriously. I have been fortunate to have lived through periods in time where soul, jazz, latin, funk, hip hop, rock, disco, new wave, reggae, house, techno, freestyle, punk, original electro etc, significantly impacted new york club life and dj culture. Discriminating against musical genres is something I consider intolerant. If there's an ounce of soul in it, it works for me. Many know my name as a producer in the world of hip hop, others from house music. Some people may not know me from any of my recorded work and only as a DJ. But, however you know me, understand that whatever I indulge myself in musically, my soul goes in. If you see me in a venue somewhere and my eyes are closed while behind the wheels, know that I'm internalizing the room, the people's energy and the music. If you've found my music online somewhere or have collected various vinyl pieces through the years, know that what came out is a reflection of my soul and whatever I felt when it was recorded. Miles Davis said there's only two kinds of music, good and bad. Thats all that really matters to me. I refuse to be put in a box, and I detest being controlled. I'm musically free and I do what I want to do. I'm blessed to have various platforms to provide the masses with my varied musical personas. The podcasts I post here will be another platform. There has been a great deal of hesitance on my part to post mixes online because I feel as though overly exposing your dj skills virally could dilute an artist's demand for live appearances, and allow for sucker dj's to blatantly bite (copy) your shit! But, after years of people harassing me for cd's and mixes I figured this is the best way to give back and expose my inner thoughts. So here we go. Keep your ears open and be on alert for what's to come. Music Is The World >< DJ Spinna Fans of this Show
